What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a 5000 year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. In fact, Traditional Chinese medicine (seen commonly practiced in the U.S. as acupuncture) and other ancient medical practices find their roots in Ayurveda. More than a system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge).
Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines (including diet, meditation and yoga) Ayurveda teaches us that health is the manifestation of balance between our environment, body, mind and spirit. It is not just the absence of disease thatdefines “health.” Rather, ayurveda views vibrant health as your birthright.
Understanding the Dosha's-
Ayurveda views all of nature (including human beings) as a combination of three main types: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each of us has a unique proportion of these types in our basic nature. Environmental factors, such as stress, diet, exercise, and daily routine can affect the balance of our natural constitution. When imbalance is present, toxicity (or ama in Sanskrit) may build in our tissues, compromising whole-health and well being. In balance, one’s prevailing dosha will manifest in these characteristics:
Vata: light, thin frame; energetic, joyous, quickthinking and strong communicator Pitta: medium build, light hair and eyes; passionate, intelligent, and courageous Kapha: heavy set, thick, oily skin; steady, motherly, methodical and thoughtful Out of balance, a dosha may manifest as:Vata:anxiety, gas/bloating/constipation, forgetfulness and restlessness Pitta: irritability or anger, rashes, diarrhea, being critical and controllingKapha: depression, weight gain, mucous build-up, difficulty waking, complacency You can learn about your dosha by taking the “dosha quiz” at the Chopra Centers web site.
Ayurvedic Massage Therapy:

At the Ayurvedic Bodywork Center, we use ayurvedic massage to treat imbalance and help restore vibrant health. The ayurvedic massage experience is meditative, rejuvenating, and luxurious. When a specific health concern is present, we may recommend a consultation with an ayurvedic physician or consultant who can help you design a treatment plan. Your therapist will gladly assist you with any questions you may have about ayurveda, treatment goals, and lifestyle modifications.
SWEDISH MASSAGE:
The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling.
The ultimate for stress reduction and pain relief! Swedish Massage utilizes long, gliding strokes, kneading the muscles, as well as slow and soothing stretches. Your massage can be firm, working the deep muscles, or delivered as a light, relaxing massage. Let our talented therapists provide you with the best combination of techniques based on your needs and preferences. You may add aromatherapy to your session for an enhanced treatment! Choose one of our intoxicating blends to customize your session.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE:
Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles not with the grain. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly you should feel better than ever within a day or two.
HOT STONE MASSAGE:
Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. The massage therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them. The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.
Hot stone massage is suited to people who tend to feel chilly or who have cold feet. It's also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure.
HAWAII MASSAGE LOMI LOMI:
The Lomi Lomi massage was brought by early Polynesian settlers to Hawaii, where it has been practiced for hundreds of years by both children and chiefs alike.
RAIN DROP THERAPY:
Whether you’re a man or a woman, if you’re looking to relax and improve your health at the same time, you will enjoy a raindrop therapy massage. It’s unlike anything you’ll ever experience in your life.
Raindrop therapy is a treatment where there are alternating series of essential oils, heat, and massage that alter your body chemistry to soothe your mind. Some of the oils are meant to stimulate certain nerve centers of your body, while others are meant to bring peace into your body. The heat moves things around and gets things going. When done properly, you’ll feel great at the end. If done improperly, you could feel burning sensations that can be overwhelming.
An incredibly intoxicating aromatherapy treatment! This very gentle neck and back massage is combined with essential oils and energetic healing techniques. The "raindrop" application of these fragrant oils helps to creae an intense relaxation response. Raindrop Therapy is perfect for easing emotional changes and rejuvenating a fatigued mind.
LAVA SHELL MASSAGE:
Lava Shell Massage is very similar in modality to hot stone therapy.
These finely polished shells generate heat through contact with gels derived from sea kelp, dead sea salts and self heating natural minerals (Lava Gel) and retain heat for up to two hours, no electrical device needed. Heat relaxes muscles and enhances circulation. Heat expands blood vessels which increases the flow of oxygen. With the blood vessels dilated healing nutrients along with oxygen are able to move quicklyallowing circulation. The circulation speeds repair with an injury and or tender muscles and tissue. Heat massage also allows for a great sense of relaxation.
BAMBOO MASSAGE:
Chinese, Indonesian, and Japanese festivals, rituals, and myths abound with bamboo symbolizing life energy, prosperity, longevity, sexuality, and fertility. In China, stalks of bamboo still symbolize eternal youth, strength, prosperity, and peace. What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots and perhaps deeper associations than simply bodywork. Today, bamboo massage is touted as Bamboo-Fusion, Tian di Bamboo Massage, or simply promoted at high-end spas as the latest in exotic treatments or for massage therapists as a new tool, but bamboo can be seen as much more than a new trend or accessory.
Bamboo massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide deep-tissue work. (The Japanese name for bamboo is take, while the Chinese call it chu. It is from this word that the cho sticks, used by some bamboo massage practitioners, take their name.) Some practitioners combine elements of shiatsu, traditional Chinese medicine (where bamboo cups or the ends of the stalks are used in specific ways), Thai massage, lymphatic drainage, and even ayurveda into the technique, and sticks are sometimes heated or essential oils are incorporated into the massage. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, and lymphatic drainage and provides a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. An added benefit for the practitioner is that using the bamboo sticks helps to reduce stress and strain on hands and fingers while still allowing for deeply penetrating maneuvers.
HERBAL BALL MASSAGE:
This is a traditional treatment from Thailand. Its focus is in balancing the Life energy or ‘Prana’ flowing in the body by stimulating the Sen Sib lines, the major channels in which the Prana flows. The herbs utilized are a traditional blend from the Wat Po temple in Bangkok. A steamed herbal ball is pressed along the lines (or acupressure zones) in a series of motions to clear any blockages and stimulate blood flow and lymphatic drainage. The herbs are beneficial for their anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. They are also valuable for drawing out toxins as well as for their aroma-therapeutic value. This treatment is a true gift from the Far East!
THE ART OF CUPPING MASSAGE:
An ancient technique has found its place in the modern world of healing. Massage cupping is a motion version of the common practice of cupping therapy, used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and the results that this simple treatment produces are impressive. Through suction and negative pressure, massage cupping releases rigid soft tissue; drain excess fluids and toxins; loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue; and bring blood flow to stagnant skin and muscles.
The therapeutic applications of cupping have been documented through several thousand years of clinical experience. Cupping is used extensively in TCM and has now been adapted for other health-care modalities, including massage therapy and chiropractic. Massage cupping intensifies the therapeutic aspect of traditional cupping and is an effective addition to any spa, healing facility or private practice. The cups are inexpensive, the therapy is fun and result-oriented, and the client response is remarkable.

The usage of pure, plant essences to calm, detoxify and energize dates back beyond the time of Cleopatra. Incorporating these essential oils into a custom massage treatment can help balance the mind and body. Each oil has a unique fragrance and therapeutic property. Beyond nourishing the skin, essential oils affect real chemical changes in your system as their tiny molecules are absorbed through the skin and nose, significantly altering your body and your mood. We can use the perfect blend to stimulate, soothe or invigorate you, depending on your needs or preference. Aromatherapy incorporated into your massage will take you to an even greater level of rejuvenation for your body, mind and spirit!

Reflexology pressure points in the feet coordinate with other parts of the body, and proper massage of these pressure points can alleviate pain or discomfort in the coordinating areas.Reflexology is applied as a massage technique on the hands and feet to target and stimulate parts of the body that require healing or treatment.
